It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
