It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
