It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
