It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
