It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
