It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
