It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
