It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
