It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
