It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
