It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
