It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
