It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
