It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
