It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
