It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
