It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
