It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
