It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
