It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
