It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
