It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
