It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
