It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
