It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
