It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
