It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
