It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
