It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
