It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
