It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
