It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
