It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
