It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
