It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
