It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
