It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
