It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
