It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
