It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
