It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
