It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
