It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
