It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
