It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
