It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
