It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
