It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
