It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
