It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
